Black Friday

Black Friday 2018, or the day after the American Thanksgiving, is seen as the first day of the holiday shopping period.

Why is it called Black Friday?

The term ‘Black Friday’ originates from Philadelphia in the 1960s. It was used to describe the inconvenience caused by heavy traffic and a large number of people on the streets on this particular day. The term became more popular year after year and an alternative explanation emerged. When retailers make losses, it is said they are ‘in the red’ and Black Friday would be a turning point due to the increase in sales. Retailers’ accounts would then be reported ‘in black’ for making profits again.

What is Black Friday all about?

Black Friday is considered to be the kick off for the holiday shopping season with all the main retailers such as Walmart, Target, Sears, Home Depot making huge discounts to attract a maximum of consumers. It used to be a kind of unwritten rule that retailers should not start holiday sales before Thanksgiving. However, retailers were so keen on doing sales that they managed to pressure the government and at the time, Roosevelt found a compromise by celebrating Thanksgiving on the last Thursday in November instead of the original date of November 30. It did not work out very well at the beginning and people celebrated both days or whichever one but they became used to it after a few years. Then Congress introduced a new law so Thanksgiving is now celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. Nowadays, stores have been adapting their opening hours in order to sell as much as possible. Therefore, they started opening very early in the morning, or even during the night. However, a debate is now open as quite a few stores open in the evening of Thanksgiving this year, which is supposed to be a family holiday and not a shopping day!
